2016 Women's AFCON preparations underway

With less than three months to the 2016 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the host nation, Cameroon is speeding up infrastructure construction.

At various venues located primarily in the Central and South-west regions of the country, work is progressing steadily to ensure everything is handed over in time for the tournament.

Yannick Nankem, Supervising Civil Engineer said, “Work is progressing very well. Since the Prime Minister came by, companies have re doubled their efforts. They recruited more people and set up a new schedule to catch up”.

Besides the sports facilities, new resorts have also emerged and several tourist attractions have been renovated.

Serge Epouné, Communications Director of the Department of Tourism thinks it is ‘‘a wonderful, fantastic occasion, an opportunity to develop Cameroon as a destination”.

And for the stakeholders this tournament presents an opportunity to develop women’s football in Cameroon especially because men’s football receives a lot more attention and interest

Véronique Njoudja, a member of Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses is excited at the opportunities it presents.

“I am very pleased that we can organize such an event in our country. This will allow everyone to see some hidden talent because women’s football is really underestimated in Cameroon. “

The draw of the Women’s AFCON will be held on September 18 in the Cameroonian capital, and the competition will take place from November 19 to December 3 in Yaounde and Limbe.
